Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments we administer to clients at ReVive Med Spa in Kansas City, MO. They are gel-based injectables, and the ingredients of the gel vary depending on what your goals are. The most common ones contain hyaluronic acid but may contain many other skin-plumping active ingredients.
The kind of facial fillers you choose will impact how long the results last, from six months to a year and a half.
When you wish to add volume to your face with facial fillers, a cheek filler can give you a more even skin tone and a youthful roundness to the face. Lip fillers are another very popular procedure, plumping your pout and reducing the effects of aging around your lips.
Although they are most commonly used in the face, dermal fillers can be inserted just about anywhere in the skin that needs a little plumping up.
Today, we’re looking at some of the most common dermal filler procedures, why they work, and what you can expect from the treatment. When you need more information about whether a particular facial filler is right for you, call us to schedule a personalized consultation.
While some people naturally have full, plump lips, many people don’t, and there is only so much that well-applied lip liner and lipstick can do to enhance your mouth. Lips commonly thin with age, so as you grow older, your lips become thinner and more pursed.
Lip fillers add volume to the lips and give them more shape, from a full lower lip to a bow shape or a fuller upper lip. This is a simple treatment that can have a dramatic effect on your overall appearance and give you more confidence when talking and smiling.
Lip fillers usually take a few treatment sessions to have the full effect. When volume is added gradually, the effect is gradual, and you’re better able to get used to talking and eating naturally with fuller lips.
Our experienced dermatologists assess your lips and know exactly how much to inject to give you the desired results, usually more on the bottom lip and less on the top for a full yet natural look.
Hyaluronic acid or collagen is the most popular dermal filler for fuller lips. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, holding a large amount of water, with more natural results.
Laughter is the best medicine, but over time, your grin will leave “parentheses” on either side of your face. You may have seen laugh lines referred to as:
All these terms refer to creases in the cheeks and are a noticeable sign of aging. In some cases, the laugh lines may create a jowling effect, too, with the jawline and chin. Dermal fillers can reduce the depth of laugh lines and, for people with mild to moderate nasolabial folds, may eliminate them entirely.
Cheek fillers are injected directly into the creases around your mouth. They add volume to the creases and smooth out the lines, making them less visible.
You may have noticed that your eyes may appear sunken or hollow as you grow older. This is another natural effect of aging, caused by the skin’s lack of elasticity from decreased collagen production. This area may also be referred to as a “tear trough.”
The plumping properties of dermal fillers may significantly affect the hollow areas under the eyes, adding fullness. In this area, fillers have an immediate result. The filler ingredients stimulate the body to produce more elastin and collagen, which will naturally add volume to the area over time.
You may also see a reduction in dark circles and eye bags and a smoothing of the fine lines around the eyes and lashes.
The skin on the tops of your hands is some of the thinnest on the body. Your hands work hard, too, and sun exposure, frequent handwashing, and activities of daily living all contribute to this part of the body often looking much older than the rest!
The thin skin of the hands is especially vulnerable to blemishes, wrinkles, and visible sun damage. Hand skin also takes on a “crepey” appearance with age, resembling delicate tissue paper.
We offer several treatments to reduce the signs of aging on your hands, including chemical peels and laser resurfacing, although dermal filler injections are the only way to improve the volume in your hands and restore the firmness and smoothness of the skin.
Like the area underneath the eyes, the hands also respond immediately to filler treatments. Plumper hands make the tendons, veins, bones, and wrinkles less visible, presenting a more youthful appearance.
Fillers are injected into specific areas, and your dermatologist will massage them for an even finish. This fills the contours of your hands without restricting your movements and dexterity.
If you wish to reduce the signs of aging, including loss of elasticity in the facial and hand skin, you may be very pleased with the results of targeted dermal fillers.
